A LOUISIANA: THE STATE WE'RE IN SPECIAL

On August 11, 2016, a stationary storm dumped torrential rains over 21 Louisiana parishes with rainfall rates as high as 2-3 inches an hour reported. Over the next days the flooding began in earnest with multiple rivers reaching flood stage, many of them posting record numbers. The National Weather Service called it a Thousand-Year Flood. 

In this special episode of Louisiana: The State We're In, we hear from survivors who watched the water rise and inundate their towns and neighborhoods, displacing thousands of residents and forever altering their communities. We look at the actions of first responders and volunteers that rallied to support those affected by the disaster. Meteorologists break down the unusual weather patterns that produced the thousand-year flood and explain why flooding continued days later as river levels hit historic marks. Finally, we'll examine what has changed over the past decade, from major drainage and flood mitigation projects to improvements in scientific models that could provide earlier warnings in the future.
