FROM THE LPB VAULT: UNCLE EARL - LOUISIANA'S COLORFUL GOVERNOR

Filer image

UNCLE EARL (1985)
Tuesday 8pm

As part of LPB’s yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration, we’re opening our archives to feature Uncle Earl, an LPB original documentary on Earl K. Long, one of Louisiana’s most colorful and controversial governors—and the only sitting governor ever committed to a mental institution, not once, but twice.

Known as “Uncle Earl,” Long was far from the “crazy country bumpkin” some claimed him to be. He was a sharp, fearless politician and a champion of working-class Louisianans, widely regarded as a poor man’s friend. His private life also made headlines, particularly his highly publicized affair with New Orleans burlesque star Blaze Starr.

With rare archival footage and interviews from family, colleagues, and historians, this LPB production captures a colorful and complex chapter of Louisiana’s political history. Don’t miss this special vault broadcast, celebrating five decades of LPB storytelling.

THE IMPACT OF BEING POOR IN AMERICA

FRONTLINE Born Poor
Tuesday 9pm

More than a decade ago, the acclaimed PBS series FRONTLINE explored poverty in America as it's rarely seen: through the eyes of children.

Now, nearly 15 years later, the series tells the stories of those now-grown children, spending 14-years chronicling their lives from childhood to the present day, offering a powerful, personal, and longitudinal look at the realities of growing up in poverty in the U.S.

In Born Poor, the filmmakers follow Kaylie, Johnny, and Brittany across three chapters of
their lives as they grow from kids to teenagers to adults, trying to pursue their dreams while
dealing with an economy where they face more obstacles than opportunities — and trying to overcome the grinding poverty that shaped their childhoods.

KING OF THEM ALL: THE STORY OF KING RECORDS
Friday 9pm

Learn more about the undertold story of King Records, a scrappy Cincinnati label that reshaped American music. Founded in the 1940s by Syd Nathan, a brash outsider dismissed by the industry, King dared to put everything under one roof. In a single building, records were written, recorded, pressed, and shipped — capturing performances with an urgency the industry giants couldn’t match. James Brown’s fiery soul, Little Willie John’s smooth R&B, Hank Ballard’s rock ’n’ roll anthems, and the Stanley Brothers’ bluegrass harmonies all came through King.

PBS THEMED PUMPKIN CARVING TEMPLATES
It's time to get carving! Create unique PBS-themed jack-o-lanterns by printing out your favorite stencil, tracing it onto your pumpkin, and (with adult supervision) carefully carving your PBS pumpkin. Parents are best to man the carving, but kids usually love helping to clean out the gooey mess inside, preparing the pumpkin for a candle or light. And remember, pumpkins don't have to be carved to look spook-tacular. Paint and decorate and leave the carving for another time. Remember to use acrylic paint so that the design doesn't wash away if you plan on putting your patch outside!
