TELLING LOUISIANA STORIES FOR 50 YEARS
LPB has been Louisiana's storyteller for 50 years, developing our own documentaries and working with independent filmmakers to share stories about our unique culture, people, and history. This week, explore Cane River Creole heritage, New Orleans funerals, iconic Fats Domino, and Louisiana's outsized contributions to arts, sports, and politics!
THE SPIRIT OF A CULTURE: CANE RIVER CREOLES
Monday 7:00pm
In a story that pre-dates America, the multi-cultural Creoles of Cane River see themselves as somewhere between black and white. The Spirit of a Culture: Cane River Creoles recounts the Cane River Creole identity struggle from colonial French Louisiana to today’s Creole led multicultural renaissance – against the notion of race as a deciding feature of a population.
FATS DOMINO: WALKIN' BACK TO NEW ORLEANS
Tuesday 7:00pm
On August 29th, 2005, one of New Orleans’ most celebrated and culturally diverse neighborhoods, an area known as the lower Ninth Ward, was literally washed away. Washed away when the nearby levees failed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. As the water rose, homes, memories and lives were destroyed.
One lifelong resident of the area, who embodied this spirit in everything he did, was Antoine Domino…known the world over as Fats. The film explores how one humble man became a symbol of strength and hope for a city in despair.
CITY OF A MILLION DREAMS
Tuesday 8:00pm
Known the world over, “jazz funerals” are as complex as they are varied. This critically acclaimed documentary takes us deep into those traditions, training a lens on the unique and resilient culture of New Orleans. Starting in 2005, writer and videographer Deb Cotton began chronicling New Orleans parading club culture which was spawned by the legacy of “funerals with music”. This tradition is carried by the prolific clarinetist Michael White, renowned for playing “the widow’s wail” in sorrowful dirges. When Hurricane Katrina hits, White loses everything in the catastrophic flooding. In his struggle to rebuild, White becomes an everyman, embodying the resurrection spirit of jazz funerals.

MONITORING "CANCER ALLEY" AND BAKING THE OLD FASHIONED WAY
LOUISIANA: THE STATE WE'RE IN
Friday 7:00pm | Stream at lpb.org/lswi & on the LPB YouTube channel
The impact of Louisiana's chemical industry on residents' health has been a topic of debate for decades. Now, a new investigation is highlighting possible gaps in air monitoring in the area dubbed "Cancer Alley". LPB's Christina Jensen speaks to the investigation's author and the Louisiana Chemical Association about those concerns.
The small town of Jeanerette is home to one of the oldest, continuously operating bakeries in Louisiana. LeJeune's opened its doors in 1884, and is still owned by the same family who still use those original recipes. LPB's Johnny Atkinson takes us inside to see how the small bakery has stood the test of time.
