ONE OF THE WORLD'S LAST AND GREATEST TROPICAL WILD LANDS - EXPLORE THE KIMBERLEY

Filer image

THE KIMBERLEY: AUSTRALIA'S WILD WEST
LIMITED SERIES BEGINS
Wednesday 9:00pm

This landmark 3-part series captures never-before-seen footage of The Kimberley, Australia’s remote northwest region, from a First Nations perspective, chronicling a year of extreme tropical seasons to reveal the stories hidden within the rugged landscape.

The Kimberley spans over 400,000 square kilometers of tropical wilderness, including turquoise coastlines, towering gorges, sandy deserts and sprawling savanna. The harsh, inaccessible terrain hides remarkable biodiversity, from the fearsome crocodiles who rule the rivers, to the marsupial gliders who soar over the savanna, to the hundreds of thousands of migratory shorebirds who travel from all over the planet to feed on the rich coastline. This near-pristine corner of the world is vital refuge for countless creatures. It is also the frontline of biodiversity conservation, where Traditional Owners and ecologists are working together to save the species who call the Kimberley home.

From the scorching dry season of Lalin, when desperate wallabies risk “death by ancient reptile” as they brave the last water sources to drink, to the monsoon season of Wilakarrawhen the annual pulse of water brings the landscape roaring to life and sparks an inter-species baby boom, each season brings new challenges and new opportunities to Kimberley. The Kimberley: Australia’s Wild West showcases a year of these animals’ lives and tracks the quests of those working to protect them.

Episode 1 "River of Life"
At the end of Lalin, the Kimberley’s intense hot dry season, parched wallabies face peril to reach water in rivers ruled by fearsome saltwater crocodiles. When heat and humidity peak, frill-necked lizards battle for mates under skies rippling with lightning. Wilakarra (the rainy season), returns life to the Kimberley and revives the mighty Martuwarra/Fitzroy River, where Nyikina man and actor Mark Coles Smith launches a rafting expedition to explore its remote reaches. Tiny jacana chicks learn the ropes in the wetlands and frill-necked lizard hatchlings emerge, joining the host of new life born in the wet season.

The series tracks the efforts of Diving with a Purpose (DWP), an offshoot of the National Association of Black Scuba Divers, as they put together a multi-racial group of men and women to search for and locate six slave ships that went down with their human cargo. These modern-day adventures serve as springboards to tell the stories behind the ideology, economics and politics of slavery. It’s a story of brutality and inhumanity, but also of resistance, accomplishment and hope.

In Episode 1, Jackson traces his DNA to the Benga tribe of Gabon and begins his search for sunken slave ships.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO FEMA AND WHAT THAT COULD MEAN FOR LOUISIANA; THE FULL FLAVOR OF WASHINGTON PARISH WATERMELONS

A swirling background of brightly colored blues and green blues. A logo reads Louisiana The State We're In with an icon of the louisiana state capitol.

LOUISIANA: THE STATE WE'RE IN
Friday 7:00pm  |  Sunday 5:00pm

Proposed changes to FEMA could have significant implications for Louisiana as the 2026 hurricane season gets underway. Recommendations from a federal review council would shift more responsibility for disaster response and recovery to state and local governments while potentially reducing some federal assistance programs. Supporters say the changes could improve efficiency, but critics warn they may place greater financial burdens on states that frequently face disasters. LPB's Christina Jensen talks to state leaders to discuss the pros and cons.

Washington Parish watermelons are more than a summertime treat; they're a source of pride for communities across the parish. Farmers say the area's sandy soil helps produce a distinctive flavor earning the melons a reputation throughout Louisiana and beyond. LPB's Johnny Atkinson takes us to Washington Parish to see how the watermelons are a symbol of heritage, hard work and hometown pride.
