Louisiana’s Hidden History

Are you gearing up to teach about Spanish Louisiana and Governor Bernardo de Gálvez this semester, or looking for ways to connect your classroom to the America 250 celebration? ExploreLouisiana’s Hidden History: Spanish Louisiana in the American Revolution—a brand-new collection of resources produced by LPB Education and available on PBS LearningMedia.

Designed for grades 3–8, this collection features short, student-friendly videos and engaging classroom activities that highlight key topics such as the Battle of Baton Rouge and Lake Pontchartrain in direct support of 6th grade social studies standards. Students will especially enjoy the Eject the English Escape Room activity, where they analyze primary sources to help Gálvez defeat the British, and the Reimagining the Revolution activity, which challenges them to imagine alternate outcomes to Gálvez’s missions and the Revolution.

Your students will explore how climate change could impact these crucial survival strategies, learn about the survival mechanisms of animals in the winter.

Salamander of the Gods: From Aztecs to Axolotls | Wild Hope(6-8,9-12) What is an axolotl, and why are scientists working to save it? The axolotl is an amphibian with incredible regenerative abilities that lives in only one place outside captivity: Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. In this lesson fromWild Hope, students will learn about the axolotl’s habitat restoration, species conservation, and the role cultural heritage plays in protecting endangered animals such as this funky amphibian. They will also uncover the unusual alliances that demonstrate how saving species can be as much about culture and heritage as it is about science.

LPB Call for Nominations for Louisiana Young Heroes

Louisiana Public Broadcasting announces the 2026 Louisiana Young Heroes program and the statewide call for nominations of students to be recognized as Louisiana Young Heroes. A Young Hero is defined as an exceptional individual who has excelled in academics, given significantly of themselves through public service, overcome adversity, exhibited extraordinary heroism, or inspired others through their deeds and strength of character to become better students, persons, and citizens. Parents, principals, teachers, guidance counselors, family members, and friends who know of high school students deserving of recognition for their tenacity, good work and commendable deeds, are encouraged to nominate them!

Nominees must be Louisiana students in grades 9-12, enrolled in an academic institution or homeschool program, and cannot be older than 18 years of age. Nominations and supporting materials should be submitted through the online form at lpb.org/heroes. The deadline for entries is Sunday, March 1, 2026. (Previous Young Heroes are not eligible.)

Math in Context (K-2) – Help students investigate the context in which math is used. From sports, to medicine, to music – math is all around us in everyday life.

How Our Economy Works: Spend, Save, Spin(3-5) This resource challenges students with realistic wants and needs. By making good choices and using mental math, students work their way around the board.

Primary Sources(6-8) Discover an array of primary source resources that span from ancient civilizations to modern-day events. In this channel, explore authentic images and documents from a variety of subjects, including STEM, world history, civics, literature, the arts, and more.

Literary Devices(9-12)Discover the different literary devices, or techniques, writers use to make their work more interesting to read. Writers use special techniques, especially in fiction and poetry, that make the writing exciting and memorable. For example, writers use techniques like foreshadowing, irony, and flashbacks in fictional stories. They use techniques like rhyme, rhythm, and alliteration in poetry. Some literary devices, such as figurative language, may appear in fiction or poetry.
