VERDI'S REQUIEM: THE MET REMEMBERS 9/11

Great Performances commemorates the solemn 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with an encore presentation of this special performance by The Metropolitan Opera. Hosted by world-renowned ballerina Misty Copeland from nearby the site of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the special includes footage from the archives of the museum as well as New York City’s Tribute in Light, a commemorative public art installation featuring two beams of light that reach up to four miles into the sky, echoing the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers, every year from dusk to dawn on the night of September 11.

FRONTLINE: THE MAN WHO KNEW

As an FBI agent who specialized in counter-terrorism, John P. O’Neill investigated the bombing of the American embassies in Africa, the USS Cole in Yemen, the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, and the first attack on the World Trade Center. O’Neill came to believe America should kill Osama bin Laden before Al Qaeda launched a devastating attack, but his was often a lonely voice. A controversial figure inside the buttoned-down world of the FBI, he was forced out of the job he loved and entered the private sector – as director of security for the World Trade Center.

With roots going back centuries, including in Black mutual aid and benevolent societies, second line culture in New Orleans embodies a spirit of mentorship, community engagement, resistance, and joy.

CIRCLES: THE LIFE OF BILLY CANNON

Every generation of LSU fans can tell you where Billy Cannon’s legend began. On Halloween night in 1959, one electrifying punt return transformed him into a college football legend. But that unforgettable play was only the beginning of an extraordinary life marked by remarkable success, devastating failure, and ultimately redemption. 

The original LPB documentary CIRCLES: THE LIFE OF BILLY CANNON premieres Monday, September 14 at 7:00 PM on LPB’s statewide network, telling the story of one of Louisiana’s most iconic figures. 

Cannon seemed to have everything: a Heisman Trophy, a professional football career, and eventually, a successful orthodontic practice. Then, a federal counterfeiting conviction brought a stunning and very public fall from grace. But that would not be Cannon’s final chapter. Through candid interviews with family members, friends, teammates, and others who knew him best, the documentary explores the man behind the legend and the lasting impact of his remarkable journey. 

“My father was a complicated man who made mistakes, paid a tremendous price for them, and then spent the rest of his life working to become a better person,” says Billy’s daughter, Bunnie Cannon. “His story is one of extraordinary achievement, very public failure, personal accountability, redemption, and the opportunity to rebuild a life with purpose.”

"Louisiana loves a comeback, and LPB loves to tell Louisiana stories. This film is a natural fit for us," says LPB President and CEO Clarence "C.C" Copeland. "For generations, Louisianans have known Billy Cannon as a football legend. This documentary goes beyond the highlights to tell the complete story of a remarkable life, giving viewers a deeper understanding of the man behind one of the state's most enduring figures."

LPB’s Linda Midgett and Jay Dardenne reunite for the project, following the success of their first LPB documentary together, Why Louisiana Ain’t Mississippi… or Any Place Else! 

“Billy refused all film requests to tell his story during his lifetime, but his family believes the story should be told,” says Dardenne, who serves as both Executive Producer and Producer on the project. “It is a behind-the-scenes look at how and why it happened and the impact on his family and those he touched.” 

“The Cannon family trust LPB to tell the full story fairly and sensitively. They gave us total editorial control of the project, and all family members are participating. That says a lot and adds so much depth to the storytelling,” says Midgett, the project’s Director and Executive Producer. “Billy’s story of football, fame, and redemption is about as Louisiana as it gets and as Louisiana’s storyteller, LPB is uniquely positioned to share it with the world.”

In addition to the broadcast, the film will be livestreamed and available on demand through LPB Passport following its premiere. WLAE-TV in New Orleans will simulcast the program with LPB at 7:00pm with WYES-TV broadcasting at 9:00pm. Learn more at lpb.org/billycannon.
