LPB Educational Collection Now Available Nationwide on PBS LearningMedia

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(LOUISIANA STATEWIDE – January 20, 2026) – Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) has released a new educational collection on the American Revolution that is now available to educators, students, and families nationwide through PBS LearningMedia, highlighting the pivotal role Spanish Louisiana and Governor Bernardo de Gálvez played in America’s fight for independence.

The launch comes as the nation prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone that is shining new light on the overlooked contributions of places like Louisiana to the nation’s founding.

The collection, Louisiana’s Hidden History: Spanish Louisiana in the American Revolution, is available on PBS LearningMedia at lpb.pbslearningmedia.org. Educators, students, and families can access the materials by searching “Gálvez.”

Developed by LPB’s Education Services team, the collection includes six standards-aligned resources designed for students in grades 3-8. The materials feature student-friendly videos and engaging lesson plans that explore how diverse troops from Louisiana, led by Gálvez, helped defeat British forces and alter the course of the Revolutionary War.

“Most Americans learn about the American Revolution through the lens of the original thirteen colonies, but Spanish Louisiana played a crucial role that often goes untold,” said Katy Stark, LPB Educational Specialist. “These resources give students everywhere the opportunity to discover how Louisiana helped change the course of history.”

PBS LearningMedia is a free digital library offering thousands of interactive, curriculum-aligned resources that teachers and parents can search by grade level or subject.

“PBS LearningMedia makes it easy for educators to find trusted, engaging content that supports learning both in and out of the classroom,” said Nancy Tooraen, LPB Educational Services Director. “By contributing Louisiana-produced resources to this platform, LPB is ensuring that our state’s history reaches students far beyond our borders.”

The Gálvez collection joins other Louisiana-centered learning materials created by LPB for PBS LearningMedia, including a seven-video collection tied to the documentary series Why Louisiana Ain’t Mississippi… or Any Place Else! That series introduces students to key themes and stories that define the state’s cultural and historical identity.

“LPB’s role in public media is not only to serve Louisiana’s students, but to share our state’s story with the nation,” said Clarence “C.C” Copeland, LPB President and CEO. “Through PBS LearningMedia, millions of students can now learn about Bernardo de Gálvez and Louisiana’s role in the American Revolution, a story that belongs in classrooms everywhere.”

LPB developed the Gálvez learning resources in part through a PBS LearningMedia Kern Family Foundation Grant in support of the PBS documentary series The American Revolution
