A TASTE OF LOUISIANA FOR THE NATION

THE GREAT AMERICAN RECIPE
Friday 8:00pm
LPB SPECIAL FOCUS

Coby Bailey of Lafayette is about to set the world on fire with his down-home Cajun cooking! A firefighter, husband, and proud father of two, Coby is the first contestant from Louisiana chosen to appear on THE GREAT AMERICAN RECIPE, an upbeat cooking competition that spotlights the amazing variety of tastes and traditions found across the country.

The hit PBS show features eight talented home cooks from across the country, who put their culinary skills to the test. With a range of cooking styles infused by their backgrounds — from Bangladeshi to Belizean, Puerto Rican to Southern, Cajun to Afghan, Filipino to Thai — the eight home cooks reflect the wealth of diversity that makes American food so vibrant and delicious.

Growing up in South Louisiana, Coby was immersed in culinary traditions passed down through generations, with his earliest inspirations coming from his mother and grandmother, both exceptional Cajun cooks. After serving in the U.S. Navy, including Desert Storm, Coby joined the Lafayette Fire Department, where he has worked for 27 years, serving as captain for the past decade.

For Coby, cooking is more than nourishment; it’s a way of life and a connection to his heritage. Today, he proudly carries on that legacy, mastering traditional dishes that define Cajun culture. His signature dish, Stuffed Chicken with Andouille Sauce, embodies the hearty, soulful spirit of his roots.

Join us as Coby and the rest of the contestants make their big debut. In this first episode, the eight home cooks gather in the barn to share their most treasured recipes, introducing themselves to the judges with a dish that reflects their perfect meal, followed by a regional dish that represents the place they call home.

Stream across PBS & LPB platforms and watch for an encore airing on Mondays at 9:00pm.

Bill Moyers, a legend in the world of journalism and a longtime member of the extended PBS family, passed away at the age of 91. He produced many programs and documentaries for PBS. You may remember the weekly "Bill Moyers Journal" or the documentary "Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth."

Perhaps some of his most impactful work came in the form of the two-hour documentary, "Two American Families: 1991-2024." Visit www.pbs.org/food

In honor of the premiere of The Great American Recipe, let's talk about including kids in the kitchen!
It might sometimes create a little more work, but the act of including young children when you're working in the kitchen has many benefits including:
*Practice reading skills with recipes.
*Build math skills through counting and measuring ingredients
*Develop a sense of responsibility and pride at being a household helper.

It can also be a sneaky way to get kids interested in healthier options they might not otherwise eat! Or a way to talk about how and where food is grown! Take these Strawberries and Cream Popsicles for instance! They provide a great opportunity to talk about delicious Louisiana strawberries!
