RESILIENCE, REBUILDING, AND DANCING WHEN SOMEONE DIES

CITY OF A MILLION DREAMS
Louisiana Special Focus
Wednesday 7:00pm
The history of jazz funerals and what it tells us about the city of New Orleans is explored in this acclaimed documentary from Louisiana filmmaker and author Jason Berry. The film explores the origins and creation of the New Orleans jazz funeral – a passionate and fiery display that is full of grief and joy, sadness and elation, weeping and dancing, feathers and sequins, all at once.
Leading viewers on this journey are two compelling New Orleans figures: Deb “Big Red” Cotton, a blogger and videographer who leaves Hollywood and plunges into the world of New Orleans funerals and street parades and Dr. Michael White, a professor, clarinetist, and an esteemed jazz composer searching for the story of an ancestor at the birth of jazz, who ends up losing everything in Hurricane Katrina. As Deb and Michael meet, their intertwined quest takes this film deep into the soul of New Orleans and its history.
"The film captures the resilience of people who survived a terrible hurricane and rebuilt their lives through the life force of music and burial parades. With Louisiana facing storms every year, the film is a parable of survival and hope," says the film's director, Jason Berry. "With so many profit-driven outlets obsessed with celebrities and crime, public media is the best venue for well-researched artfully produced stories of culture, politics and history that capture America's social mosaic as a map of the world. Films of depth and honesty that entertain viewers enlarge our sense of a common culture and shared ideals, learning from the past to build a better future."
“City of a Million Dreams has received critical acclaim and been featured at film festivals and museums across the country,” says Jason Viso, LPB’s Director of Programming. “Part of LPB’s mission is to make powerful, independent films like this accessible to viewers throughout Louisiana. We’re always seeking stories that delve into the rich fabric of our state’s history and culture—documentaries that offer fresh perspectives by bringing lesser-known narratives to light. We hope audiences across Louisiana connect with this complex and moving portrait of New Orleans.”

UNEXPECTED MODERNISM: THE WIENER BROTHER'S STORY
Tuesday 7pm
It’s a little know chapter of Louisiana history that was almost lost to time. It’s a story of architects Samuel G. and William B. Wiener, whose residential, institutional, and commercial buildings made Shreveport an early hub of International Modernist design in the United States, from the 1930s through the 1960s.
UNEXPECTED MODERNISM brings to life the work and wonder of two brothers, considered by many experts to be the most prolific and celebrated architects in not only Shreveport, but also the South. They were among the first to bring postmodern architecture to the United States, making Shreveport one of the first places in the country to have a collection of designs to reflect the spirit of optimism and community building represented by postmodernism. Despite this feat, this important milestone in history isn’t widely known - and was in danger of being lost altogether.

T-GALOP: A LOUISIANA HORSE STORY
Tuesday 8:00pm
Creole cowboys and Cajun jockeys, Cotton Knights and Mardi Gras revelers reveal the long history and blend between Creoles and Cajuns and the horses they love. This equine love affair began more than 250 years ago on the first ranches of South Louisiana. Creoles and Cajuns are some of America's first cowboys. Not only essential to hard ranch work, horses were often the focus of French Louisiana's renowned joie de vivre. Filmmaker Conni Castille’s T-GALOP romps playfully across South Louisiana through professional sports to community rituals bearing witness to a modern horse culture that was born many centuries ago.
WHO WINS THE GREAT AMERICAN RECIPE? HEAR FROM COBY HIMSELF!

THE GREAT AMERICAN RECIPE The Grand Finale

You'll also have a chance to support LPB by becoming a member of Friends of LPB and score some recipe appropriate "Thank You" gifts as well.

Those gifts include a Roux Spoon, made of Louisiana pecan wood and designed specifically to keep the roux moving and get into the edges of a pan to minimize burning. All membership levels include a year of LPB PASSPORT - an extended streaming benefit for Friends of LPB.
WHAT'S COBY COOKING!

One of the great things about the PBS cooking competition show THE GREAT AMERICAN RECIPE is they share the recipes the contestants create on the show. In the finale, the contestants had to prepare their Great American Recipe. These final two recipes exemplify why Coby made it to the finals!

CYPRESS KNEE SHRIMP PO'BOY WITH HOMEMADE FRENCH FRIES
Coby offers up this take on the classic from a recipe that was sent to him by his wife Toni. What makes this po'boy a "Cypress Knee?" It's presented vertical like the cypress knees in the Atchafalaya.

CORNBREAD STUFFED CHICKEN WITH ANDOUILLE CREAM SAUCE, COLESLAW, MILLIE'S POTATOES, AND FIREHOUSE COBBLER
In the final challenge, the finalists had to prepare a full meal meaning an entree, a side, and a desert. That might seem like a lot to cook for one person, but as you'll see, he had a little help! Enjoy this "Coby on a plate" dish!
