LASTING IMPACT & LESSONS LEARNED: KATRINA 20 YEARS LATER

KATRINA 20 - A LOUISIANA: THE STATE WE'RE IN SPECIAL
Friday 7pm & 9pm
It’s been twenty years since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast – forever changing the lives and the landscape of Louisiana, particularly the city of New Orleans. In this one-hour special, LPB looks back at the lasting and continuing impact of the storm with those that experienced it, as well as a look to the future revealing what has changed since that catastrophic day.
LPB’s Karen LeBlanc and Dorothea Wilson explore how Katrina altered the look of our state, both geographically and demographically with thousands fleeing the storm and its aftermath taking Louisiana culture with them, especially to Texas. Did they ever return home? More highlights include an interview with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry who talks about protecting Louisiana from future storms and areas of improvement. And since art reflects life, we’ll visit Louisiana artists who have found an unwanted muse in Katrina.
We’ll also look at the vital role LPB played in providing a window for the entire country during that unfolding national emergency with our unprecedented collaboration with WWL-TV – a partnership that endures to this day. “That’s what we do in Louisiana during times of trouble; we show up for one another,” says Clarence “C.C” Copeland, LPB President & CEO. “Katrina left scars, but it also revealed our resilience as a state. That’s one of the things we hope viewers will take away from the special.”
Major production funding for Louisiana: The State We're In is provided by Entergy, with additional support from the Fred B. and Ruth B. Zigler Foundation and Zigler Art Museum, Visit Baton Rouge, and the Foundation for Excellence in Louisiana Public Broadcasting and Viewers Like You.

SPARK A LOVE FOR LEARNING

SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD LOVE LEARNING
These first weeks of school are a good time to inspire curiosity and wonder in your child. Health and parenting expert Jodie Fishman from PBS KIDS for Parents offers five easy ways to instill a continuous desire to learn from a young age.
1. Bring on the books! Read to your child. Read with your child. Read in front of your child. Talk to your child about what you read!
2. Expand on their interests! If they enjoyed a book about bugs, go on a field trip to look for more! Field trips transform interests into adventures, making even the mundane magical.
3. Become a hands-on hero! Hands-on learning helps children process information.
4. Sneak learning in through fun and games! Even those subjects our kids think are dull can be spiced up with songs, games, or other creative activities. Think sneaking in math by letting them measure out ingredients while you cook together.
5. Make learning rewarding! Share your thoughts or look up answers together. Help them understand it's about the process and that a wrong answer is not a reason to give up!
Opportunities abound at home to spark kids’ passion for learning and to help them become eager, life-long learners. Read more of Jodie's blog and so much more at www.pbs.org/parents.
