Safe Haven: Louisiana's Green Book: The Beauty Schools

Episode 5: Beauty Schools

The Green Book offered more than safe places to eat and sleep. It also listed locations for Black women to get their hair done! This episode of Safe Haven celebrates Carrie’s Beauty School and Salon in South Baton Rouge and Poro’s Beauty School in New Orleans. Mada McDonald and Kara St. Cyr talk about how Schools of Beauty Culture empowered Black women and their significance in the community. The series is based off "The Negro Motorist Green Book" exhibit at the Capitol Park Museum by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and sponsored by ExxonMobil Baton Rouge.
