Safe Haven: Louisiana's Green Book: The Big House
Episode 1: The Big House
Traveling while black in the Jim Crow south was dangerous and hotels were scarce. Thankfully people opened up their homes and listed them in the Green Book...decades before Airbnb was a thing! In the premiere episode of Safe Haven: Louisiana's Green Book, LPB's Kara St. Cyr visits the Giron Tourist Home in Opelousas with the grandchildren of the owner. The series is based off "The Negro Motorist Green Book" exhibit at the Capitol Park Museum by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and sponsored by ExxonMobil Baton Rouge.
