Mavis: One Simple Sentence

The year is 1921. Louisiana lawmakers ban French in classrooms, silencing the language for generations of families. Decades later, along comes Mavis Arnaud Fruge on a mission to revive the language stolen from her community. Mavis’ story is one of tenacity and resilience. Retired but far from slowing down, she dedicates two decades to reviving not just the Louisiana French language, but also the culture. Knighted twice by the French government, an honor typically reserved for national heroes, Mavis would go on to revolutionize language education. This film by award-winning Louisiana filmmakers Bill Rodman and Flo Ulmer-Rodman is as rousing as it is motivational, reminding us that it’s never too late to make a difference.
