ACTIVITY/LESSON:
Culminating Writing

  1. In the program Why Louisiana Ain’t Mississippi, it was mentioned that Louisiana is a huge port system in the United States. This port location lends itself to being an optimal place for the Oil & Gas industry. Watch the clip above about oil and gas in Louisiana and take notes using the guided discussion questions sheet.
  2. Students will take additional notes using the Guided Discussion Questions sheet while doing research to gain additional knowledge of the Oil & Gas industry in Louisiana. While researching, consider pros and cons of the Oil & Gas industry. Consider whether the relationship between the state and the industry is a ‘Symbiotic’ relationship.
  3. Class will have a Socratic Seminar discussing the information gathered and questions students have after completing their research. How to Conduct a Socratic Seminar
  4. During the last 15 minutes of the class period, students will partner with a friend to write a reflection on the class discussion using the graphic organizer Graphic Organizer
  5. Students will individually begin the culminating writing on the topic: Write about the relationship between Louisiana and the Oil & Gas industry?* Is this relationship symbiotic? Explain in detail. This should be a five paragraph paper with an introduction, a three paragraph body, and a conclusion. Students must include sources from research completed before the Socratic seminar, as supportive evidence for their essay.

*Students may write a compare /contrast paper or write the paper as an argumentative paper- as long as the prompt requirements are fulfilled.
