News Report - Moments in Louisiana History

Subject Area: Technology, ELA, Social Studies, Media Arts

OBJECTIVES

  1. Collaboratively plan with a team. Some networking and interviewing may be necessary.
  2. Students will become familiar with media literacy by watching the work of others in the media to determine truth in reporting by comparing the same story done by more than one source.
  3. Students will understand how to use lighting and sound to enhance the content of video production.
  4. Students will develop a story at all stages to be presented for viewing.
  5. Remember to make content interesting/exciting to watch, without crossing the line of lacking truth and believability.

MEDIA RESOURCES

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Computer
  • Internet
  • Mr. Garcia's Videos
  • Cameras (or iPads, phones)
  • Lights
  • Green Screen (fabric or paper)

SUGGESTED TIME
Students should be engaged for an entire class period for approximately 5-10 days.

ACTIVITY/LESSON:

  1. Find one moment in Louisiana history to focus on. This moment may be one you learned about by watching clips from Why Louisiana Ain’t Mississippi. You and your partner(s) will write a news report about this incident as though it is happening in the present day. Make sure to include in some way how these events affected present day life as well.
  2. Be as creative as possible without changing the history of this event.
  3. Remember to do proper research to collect all the facts before writing your report. Part of your research will be watching more than one news source to see what a professional news report should look like.
  4. Use all media equipment you have available to you to document your work on video. (If your resources are limited, a cell phone or iPad with an iMovie app is sufficient.) The video will be the news report. Each group will present their work with the class.
  5. Mr. Garcia's Videos will guide students through each step of the process. His videos may be viewed as a class before getting started, or each group may watch at their own pace.
