ACTIVITY/LESSON
Science
Based on the clip, discuss with students the following questions. Erosion/Repair Science
- Think about what the concept of creating sediment diversions means. Can you explain it or draw what that could possibly look like?
- How does diverting sediment create a healthier, more sustainable environment for Louisiana to flourish?
- What has happened over the last several decades to cause the boot called Louisiana to lose so much of its soil? (Use terms from the list below to explain)
- Imagine there are three land masses, all formed naturally and are composed of alluvial soil. The first land mass has no grasses, trees, or structures on it. The second has one building on it with no grasses or trees. The third has grasses and trees only. Which land mass will wash away quickest, and which will last longest? Explain your response in detail. Teachers may want to use stream tables or aluminum pans with soil or sand to model these scenarios.
- Explain creative intelligence and how it was used to begin restoration of the Louisiana coastline.
