May 2020 - Vaping in Louisiana

Several studies suggest that vaping, or the use of electronic cigarettes, weakens the lungs’ immune response and leaves the body more vulnerable to infection overall.

For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute on Drug Abuse both warn Americans that vaping could cause underlying health problems that will complicate coronavirus symptoms. In January, Louisiana Public Square explored "Vaping in Louisiana."

Since August, over 2,800 people nationwide have been diagnosed with lung illnesses related to vaping, and 68 have died, including three from Louisiana. Vaping has nearly tripled among Louisiana high school students and almost doubled among middle schooler’s just within the last two years.

As a candidate in 2019, Governor John Bel Edwards voiced support for a ban on the sale of flavored vapor products. But, is it the flavoring or the nicotine attracting younger users to vaping? What role do THC and illegal cartridges play in creating lung issues? And have e-cigarettes moved from a safer alternative for adult smokers to a new health risk for juveniles? Louisiana Public Square looks for answers on “Vaping in Louisiana” Wednesday, May 27 at 7pm on LPB and in New Orleans on WLAE. An additional broadcast will be Friday, May 29 at 8pm on LPB only.
