Mark Zappi, PhD, PE

Executive Director, Energy Institute of Louisiana

Mark E. Zappi serves as the Executive Director of the Energy Institute of Louisiana and is the holder of the BORSF Chair in Bioprocessing within the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL).

He received his BS in Civil Engineering from UL and a MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Mississippi State University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Louisiana.

Dr. Zappi is an internationally recognized expert in process design, C1 utilization, environmental engineering, alternative energy, urban biorefineries, green chemical production, energy markets, technical education, and process commercialization. He has served or is currently serving as an expert for numerous government and industrial entities including serving as co-chair of the Science Advisory Group of the State of Louisiana’s recent initiative for GHG reduction/elimination.

Dr. Zappi has published over 200 technical publications, presented over 300 technical talks across four continents, and is the holder of six patents with three more pending. He has generated over $50M in research funding. He has testified twice before the US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, once to the Louisiana Public Service Commission, and has served as an appointed expert on several legislative science advisory boards – all on the subject of green energy and chemical production. His opinions have been cited in numerous national and international media outlets.

Dr. Zappi has held positions at the US Department of Army’s Corps of Engineers, Mississippi State University, and UL. While working for the DoD, he served as the Army’s representative for long-term planning for the Tri-Services Environmental Restoration Program. He also served as a consultant to numerous industries and government entities.
