Steffek Rainey

Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council

Steffek Rainey is a member of the Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC), which is a body of 31 students from around the state that seeks to open the line of communication between youth and the legislature.

He is a member of the LYAC Environmental Committee, and is currently serving a one-year term that began in June 2020.

Steffek is a senior at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. He is the president of his school's Science Club, in which he has done a statistical analysis of the school's plastic waste, started a school garden, and advocated for other environmental initiatives, like reducing plastic in the cafeteria. He was recently nominated for the Louisiana Student of the Year award.

He will be presenting his presentation on reducing waste in the school community at a student leadership conference in late February.

Steffek is currently starting a company and non-profit to help people have better access to reusable items, thus reducing their plastic waste. He has presented it at LSU and the University of Washington, where he has won awards for his environmental projects.

He is currently a contender for the US EPA’s President’s Environmental Youth Award, the nation’s top honor for youth working to protect the environment.
