Stephanie M. Elwood

Southern University Agricultural Research & Extension Center



Stephanie Elwood is an Extension Associate with Community and School garden programs at Southern University Ag Center serving since 2011.

She received her bachelor’s degree from LSU and is currently enrolled in the Southern University’s Urban Forestry Graduate Program.

Her current work with the SU Ag Center Cooperative Extension includes, but is not limited to facilitating the “Growing Healthy” program, building gardens at Nutrition Education sites across the state, serving as the CDC Healthy Communities SU Ag Program Manager and Garden Coordinator.

Special projects include USDA grants “Eradicating Food Deserts through the Development of School Gardens”, which involved teaching at schools located in food desert areas and implementing on-campus gardens and “Using Agriculture as a Fast Track Vehicle for Change through Experiential Learning”, which taught incarcerated and adjudicated youth gardening skills.

Ms. Elwood is very involved in local and statewide community garden and food sovereignty efforts; she sits on the board of Front Yard Bikes, 501c3 and is co-founder of the grassroots organization, the Baton Rouge Garden Alliance.
