Hugh Eley

Former Deputy Sec. of Louisiana Dept. of Health

Hugh Eley is retired from a long career in state government. He worked for over thirty years on aging, disability and long term care issues at the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs and the Louisiana Department of Health.

He was instrumental in establishing Louisiana’s first home and community based waivers for the elderly, in implementing adult/elder protective services, and in carrying out the recommendations of Governor Blanco’s Long Term Care Reform initiative.

Mr. Eley served as the first Assistant Secretary of the LDH Office of Aging and Adult Services under Gov.’s Blanco and Jindal. He has served on numerous study groups on aging and long term care and presented at state and national conferences.

Among other awards, he is a recipient of the Charles E. Dunbar Award for outstanding service to the state.

He initially retired in 2014, but was asked to return to work and served as Deputy Secretary of LDH in 2015. He retired again in January of 2016, but continues to do volunteer work on aging and long term care issues.
