THE CONTROVERSIAL CREATION OF LOUISIANA'S NEWEST CITY

LOUISIANA SPOTLIGHT: A TALE OF TWO CITIES
LPB SPECIAL FOCUS
Thursday 7:00pm
Louisiana Spotlight explores the controversial creation of the new city of St. George, Louisiana, looking into the complex motivations behind municipal division and the profound implications for Baton Rouge and the state. What drives a community to seek separation, and what are the hidden dynamics of urban incorporation? Baton Rouge faces a critical moment of municipal transformation as communities grapple with the deeper meanings of cityhood, local governance, and social boundaries.
From the initial push for a separate school district to a decade-long legal battle, the program examines the intersection of race, economics, and community identity. Hosted by LPB’s Karen LeBlanc, co-anchor of Louisiana: The State We’re In, we talk one-on-one with Dustin Yates, the newly elected mayor of St. George.
Also helping us explore the topic will be a panel including:
- Scott Bergeron - St. George Resident and Business Owner
- Belinda Davis - Associate Professor of Political Science at LSU and the President of Once Community One School District
- Dwight Hudson - EBR City Council Member, District 9
- Carla Powell Lewis - East Baton Rouge School Board Member and President of the East Baton Rouge School Board from 2023-2025
The program will also be available for streaming on the night of the broadcast premiere at www.lpb.org/louisianaspotlight, on the LPB YouTube channel, and with the LPB App.
HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR EXPLORES THE TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT OF BLACK MIGRATION

GREAT MIGRATIONS: A PEOPLE ON THE MOVE
LIMITED SERIES
Tuesday 8:00pm
Human beings have always moved enmasse. Since the beginning of human existence, movement has defined how we evolved and created identities, communities, and nations-states. Migration is not unique to any single ethnicity or group, but it is a deeply profound aspect of the modern African American experience simply because Black people were denied movement for so long. The story of the meaning behind those movements and how they shaped our nation is the focus of this new four-part docuseries from the Emmy nominated, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
“The Great Migration was not just a seismic historical event; it’s an ongoing story," said Gates. "Our series focuses on three dramatic migrations that have profoundly shaped the African American experience, and redefined what it means to be ‘Black’ in this country: the great migration from the Deep South to the North and West; the reverse migration back to the South, and most recently the astonishing large migration of Africans and West Indians to this country in recent decades. In fact, more Africans migrated to the United States in a ten-year period than were forcibly shipped here over the entire course of the slave trade! Our series is the first to explore these three mass movements of Black human beings to this country, and what that has meant for the reshaping of American culture.”
The series is broken down into four 1-hour episodes running into February, as part of the PBS/LPB celebration of Black History Month.
“Exodus”
Tuesday 8:00pm
Episode 1 explores the first wave of the Great Migration (1910–1940), when more than a million Black Americans fled the Jim Crow South for the promised lands of the North, forever changing the country and themselves.
“Streets Paved in Gold”
Tuesday, February 4, 8:00pm
Episode 2 explores the second wave of the Great Migration (1940-1970), highlighting how Northern and Western Black communities matured through migration and transformed the cultural and political power of Black America.
“One Way Ticket Back”
Tuesday, February 11, 8:00pm
Episode 3 shows how the reverse migration of Black Americans to the South—driven by mass movements, economic change, and an ongoing struggle for freedom and opportunity—continues to reshape the country.
“Coming to America”
Tuesday, February 18, 8:00pm
Episode 4 tells the story of African and Caribbean immigrants in the United States, examining their profound impact on American culture and what it means to be Black in America.
Each episode will be available for streaming for up to two weeks after it premieres at video.lpb.org.

THE RISE OF A SMALL AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY

HOW WE GOT OVER
LPB SPECIAL FOCUS
Tuesday 9:00pm
After the Civil War, many formerly enslaved people left Louisiana and moved to the North or out West in search of better opportunities.
This is the story of those that decided to stay behind in West Feliciana parish.
This LPB documentary covers the history of African Americans in West Feliciana Parish during post-war Reconstruction to present day and explores the ways in which the community produced an exceptional number of Black professionals. They have endured and succeeded in ways not always seen in some Louisiana communities, primarily through two factors: education and industry.
“During that time, the very foundation of West Feliciana, like many parishes in Louisiana, was farming. Earning a living was tough. The first opportunity for change came in the form of a 19-year-old educator, John Sterling Dawson,” says LPB Senior Producer, Dorothy Kendrick. “The impact Dawson and then others had on the people of this community cannot be understated.”
From sawmills and canning companies to complex contemporary issues, HOW WE GOT OVER is a story of hard work and perseverance. “You have to know where you are going, you have to seize the moment,” says West Feliciana native Hamp Williams in the documentary. “You got to be able to see it, and you got to realize that the world is bigger than one’s own backyard.”
“These are the kinds of Louisiana stories only LPB can tell,” says LPB President & CEO, Clarence “C.C” Copeland. “With your ongoing support, these often-hidden pieces of history are brought to light, revealing the grit and determination of the people in our state.”
The documentary is narrated by Louisiana native and award-winning broadcaster, Huel Perkins, Jr.
