A MASTERPIECE ADAPTATION: ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL PREMIERES

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL ON MASTERPIECE
NEW SERIES
Sunday  8pm
STREAMING - View all seven episodes on the night of the broadcast premiere with LPB PASSPORT.

This brand new adaptation is based on best-selling author James Herriot's cherished and iconic collection of stories - which, fifty years after they were first published, still holds a special place in people's hearts throughout the world. Chronicling the heartwarming and humorous adventures of a young country vet, the books introduced readers to his unconventional mentor and the cast of farmers and townsfolk who lived and worked in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s.

This new adaptation will preserve the rich spirit, tone and values of Herriot’s iconic characters and stories and will bring to life his sharply observed, entertaining and incredibly funny tales of country life in the North of England for a modern audience, introducing a new generation to his life-affirming stories.

“When it originally aired on public broadcasting, All Creatures Great and Small captured the hearts of millions of television viewers,” says Rebecca Eaton, Executive Producer of MASTERPIECE. “We promise that the new series will have all the wit, warmth, and quirky charm of the original - and of course, lots of irresistible animals.”

TEST YOUR ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE WITH THIS 3-PART SERIES MINI-MARATHON!

SECRET LIFE OF FARM ANIMALS
3-Part Documentary Series
Sunday  5 - 8pm

There's more to farm animals than you might think! This documentary series will test animal intelligence, reveal unlikely relationships, and uncover a side of farm animals that many have never seen before.

Episode 1 - Springtime & Sheep
Sunday | 5pm

secret-life-of-farm-animals-episode-one-sheep-small.jpg#asset:42727

It’s Springtime on the farm and the focus is on sheep. We follow the first 12 weeks of a lamb’s life on a Welsh Hill farm. Along the way we find out that sheep are highly social animals with not only a remarkable ability to recognize each other, but to recognize human faces too. We meet a ram that has befriended a shy four-year-old boy and we take a drone’s eye view of some multi-colored sheep to show that despite being sociable, flocking is actually all about self-preservation. Other animals we meet on the farm include Charlie, a lonely goose looking for company in his own reflection.

Episode 2 - Summer & Cows
Sunday  | 6pm

SecretLifeofFarmAnimals-cows-small.JPG#asset:42728

It’s Summer and we follow the first twelve weeks of a Hereford calf’s life as he makes friends and settles into the herd. We discover that cows are much more than mother nature’s muck-spreaders. They’re highly social animals with complex personalities. They’re brilliant problem solvers with a love of music and given freedom to roam, thanks to the matriarch, they can thrive in the wild just as their ancient ancestors did. Is it any surprise that Hamish the Ram wants to be one? But it’s not just about cows. We also discover that chickens use twenty-four different vocalizations to communicate.

Episode 3 - Fall & Pigs
Sunday  |  7pm

SecretLifeofFarmAnimals_pig-small.jpg#asset:42729

It’s harvest season. We follow a litter of piglets from birth as they grow up in the Brecon Beacons. We test the theory that every piglet always returns to the same teat to suckle; show that pigs love mud to keep cool because they have practically no sweat glands and we show how intelligent they are with a series of puzzles. We also reveal that they are masters at the art of deception. Pigs tell porkies! Along the way we meet a pair of kunekune pigs raised as domestic pets in the heart of London. We visit a farm that uses llamas to guard its sheep and meet a pet rabbit with a remarkable identity crisis.

JAZZ UP YOUR SATURDAY NIGHTS WITH KEN BURNS

JAZZ: A FILM BY KEN BURNS
Encore Showing
Saturday 9pm
Stream the entire series on demand with LPB PASSPORT.

Filmmaker Ken Burns tells the story of jazz — the quintessential American art form. The 10-part series follows the growth and development of jazz music from the gritty streets of New Orleans to the Lincoln Gardens on Chicago's south side, where Louis Armstrong first won fame, from Prohibition-era speakeasies to the wide-open clubs of Kansas City, from the elegant Roseland Ballroom in Times Square, where only whites were allowed to dance, to the more egalitarian Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, where people of all colors mingled.

Six years in the making, JAZZ features 75 interviews, more than 500 pieces of music, 2,400 still photographs and more than 2,000 archival film clips — many rare and never before seen. Third-person voices are provided by Samuel L. Jackson, Delroy Lindo, Derek Jacobi and Harry Connick Jr., among others.

EPISODE 1 - GUMBO
JAZZ begins in New Orleans, nineteenth century America's most cosmopolitan city, where the sound of marching bands, Italian opera, Caribbean rhythms, and minstrel shows fills the streets with a richly diverse musical culture. Here, in the 1890s, African-American musicians create a new music out of these ingredients by mixing in ragtime syncopations and the soulful feeling of the blues.
