May Programming Highlights

9PM - May 6                  Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond

Starring Dominic Cooper, this action-packed drama tells the real story of Ian Fleming, the man who created James Bond. London, 1939: Ian Fleming is an irresponsible playboy living in the shadow of his dead war hero father, his successful author brother and his domineering mother. When the Second World War breaks out, Ian suddenly finds himself with a chance to shine with a job in Naval Intelligence. At first, Ian is inclined to treat his new job as a big adventure but, as the consequences of war become ever more clear to him, he begins to learn where his real talents lie.

9PM - May 10                Live from Lincoln Center: Cynthia Erivo in Concert

Enjoy a soulful evening of song from one of Broadway's brightest stars. British-born Cynthia Erivo won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in The Color Purple before starring in several films, including Widows.

10PM - May 10                Queen Victoria and Her Nine Children (3-part Series)

This is the story of Queen Victoria – a widow in mourning who had to raise her nine children on a very public stage. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were an unusually devoted couple with strong ideas about the role of the Royal Family. But when Albert died, Queen Victoria was left a single (career) mother. Queen Victoria and Her Nine Children explores Victoria’s struggle to mourn her husband’s death, carry out her Royal duties and keep both her family and public in check. It’s a fascinating glimpse at the private tensions that rumbled behind Queen Victoria’s impressive public façade.

7PM - May 26                National Memorial Day Concert

Join hosts Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise for the 30th anniversary live broadcast of America's national night of remembrance from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, featuring the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jack Everly.

10PM - May 30                Sherlock Holmes Against Conan Doyle

Although Sherlock Holmes was by far author Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation, he tried, and ultimately failed, to distance himself from Sherlock-mania. This program documents the true story behind Sherlock Holmes, the overshadowed author, and Holmes' ascension to becoming a literary icon, using clips from various Holmes movies.

Happy Mother's Day to all moms and I hope you get to enjoy some of these amazing resources this month!  Get outdoors :)  Take care, Nancy Tooraen, ntooraen@lpb.org
