Big Ideas for Little Learners

LDMA: Join us for a Louisiana Christmas Journey in December!

During December, the LDMA is heading out on a virtual Louisiana Christmas Journey.  Louisiana is the home to a variety of unique Christmas celebrations around the state.  LPB’s Louisiana: The State We’re In has captured the sights and sounds of these special events through the years.  As you prepare for this year’s festivities, relive the memories of past Christmases with the LDMA!

Explore stories related to waterfowl hunting in the Sportsman’s Paradise!

In honor of the premiere of In the Blind on December 12th on LPB, the LDMA is highlighting stories related to duck hunting in Louisiana.  In the state known as the Sportsman’s Paradise, generations of hunters have developed traditions related to waterfowl hunting and have played a vital role in the conservation efforts for bird populations and their habitats.  Explore LPB’s past stories on duck hunting culture, duck recipes, and waterfowl conservation.

Statewide Louisiana Edcamps starting soon!

Have you ever been to a Louisiana Statewide Edcamp?  If you haven't, you really need to experience one!  It's always FREE, great networking opportunities, learn from your peers and share ideas, and leave feeling energized and empowered.  There are ALWAYS great prizes!  Edcamp BR is scheduled for January 25, 2020 and registration will begin soon.  Edcamp NLA is scheduled for February 1, 2020 and is now registering.  Always check the Statewide Partnership Edcamp website for updated statewide Edcamps coming soon near you.

Shell Science Lab Challenge Competition

The annual Shell Science Lab Challenge Competition recognizes outstanding middle and high school programs for their exemplary approaches to science lab instruction utilizing limited school and laboratory resources. The Challenge will showcase the work of teachers, representing their schools, who submit innovative, replicable strategies to deliver quality lab experiences with limited equipment/resources, and award teachers/schools with additional tools, resources, and rich professional development opportunities needed to support high-quality science teaching and strengthen their existing capabilities.

Awards:

★One Grand Prize Winning School will receive a lab makeover support package valued at $20,000.

★4 National Finalist schools will each receive a lab makeover support package valued at $8,500.

★18 district winner schools will each receive a lab makeover support package valued at $3,000.

★Prizes include Shell cash grants, NSTA memberships, NSTA Learning Center subscriptions, support to attend NSTA Conferences on Science Education, and donated science lab equipment. 

★The Grand Prize Winner and 4 National Finalists will be honored at the Teacher Awards Gala at NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education.

December Programming Highlights

December 12 @ 7PM:  In the Blind -- This new LPB documentary traces the unique traditions and rich culture of waterfowl hunting in Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise and explores the sport’s relevance in a global conservation effort to preserve and restore waterfowl populations, migratory flyways and fragile habitat of this imperiled region.

December 16 @ 8 PM:  Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir: Featuring Kristen Chenoweth -- The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are joined by Kristin Chenoweth, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer, for this beloved Christmas tradition featuring favorite holiday music, dancing and storytelling.

December 25 @ 9:30 PM:  An Evening at the Governor’s Mansion 2019 -- Kix Brooks and Friends present an evening of song and music, from the beautifully decorated Louisiana Governor’s Mansion

December 31@ 7PM:  Live from Lincoln Center: New York Philharmonic New Year’s Eve 2019: Celebrating Sondheim -- The New York Philharmonic and guest vocalist Katrina Lenk (“The Band’s Visit”) celebrate the orchestral music of Stephen Sondheim, performing suites from “Sunday in the Park,” “Into the Woods,” “Sweeney Todd” and more.
