Mission Control Human Spaceflight

On May 3, 2019, students in grades 4-8 are invited to a live streaming event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United States landing on the moon (July 20, 1969) and participate in the excitement and fascination of space and space travel without leaving their desks.  This celebration of historical, current and future manned space exploration is designed to encourage students’ interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  For more information and to register click HERE.

Making and Tinkering with STEM

Join nationally recognized educator and author Cate Heroman and Knock Knock Children's Museum's Maker Shop Specialist Alexandra Pearson for a one-day workshop exploring the fundamentals of STEM education in the classroom on June 12 or June 13 from 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM.

• Examine three aspects of maker education (tinkering, making, and engineering) and explore what these look like in early childhood settings (preschool through 3rd grade).

• Experience tinkering activities as a learner and then reflect as an educator of young children.

• Engage in first-hand exploration of design challenges linked to problems characters face in children’s picture books.

• Learn strategies for establishing an environment that inspires children to think creatively, take risks, and solve problems.

May 12, 2019, marks the 35th anniversary of the opening of the Louisiana World Exposition, also known as the New Orleans World’s Fair.  The event featured pavilions from countries around the world focused on the theme, The World of Rivers: Fresh Water as a Source of Life.  Explore LPB’s coverage of this major event, including the planning process, the financial troubles, pavilion tours, and the fair’s closure on November 11, 1984.

2019 is the Year of Governors on the LDMA!  Before the gubernatorial election in October, we’ll be highlighting a different Louisiana governor every month. This month, we’re continuing our series with Governor Edwin Edwards (b. 1927).  Edwards, a native of Avoyelles Parish and resident of Crowley, represented Louisiana’s 7th Congressional District from 1965-1972.
