You may never look at police officers the same way again after you see
Rowan Atkinson ("Mr. Bean," "Black Adder") as Inspector
Raymond Fowler of the Gasforth Police in this new import from
Britain. The mild mannered and conscientious Inspector Fowler is in
charge of the uniform officers in the department. He is always clashing
with Detective Inspector Derek Grim (David Haig), who yearns for some
exciting cases in this sleepy London suburb.
Patricia (Serena Evans) and Fowler (Rowan Atkinson) are about to mark
the 10th anniversary of their relationship. She thinks he's planning to
give her a present, but he's actually preparing to celebrate the queen's
birthday. Meanwhile, Grim (David Haig) is attempting to police the
shadowy alleyways of the information super-highway. Unfortunately he
can't figure out how to turn on his computer.
Habib (Mina Anwar) falls for a handsome fireman, and Goody (James Dreyfus)
is green with envy. Grim is onto the case of his career, while Fowler is
being plagued by an insane hoaxer who claims to have had morning coffee
with Lord Lucan.
Fowler and Patricia are each held up at the bank. Fowler's hold-up is a
man with a huge pile of change and a math problem, but Patricia's situation
is more serious. Grim is on the phone to the home office; Kray (Kevin Allen)
is on the phone to the kebab shop. Complications ensue.
Grim needs a woman to serve as a decoy in a plan to snare Terry the Tank.
His first choice is Habib, dressed up in her sexiest outfit. However, the
local pub's quiz final is approaching, and the station can't win without
Habib's brains. Unfortunately, Terry the Tank drinks at the pub where the
final is being held, and Grim can't risk blowing her cover. He must find a
replacement, but how would Gladstone (Rudolph Walker) or Goody look in a
miniskirt?
During the night shift, teenage hoodlums and juvenile delinquents crowd
the station. Patricia can't wait to get out of the company of adolescents,
but unfortunately, Fowler's son is visiting. Meanwhile, Grim is called to
work on a case with Scotland Yard, and Fowler has a hard time admitting that
he's jealous.
When a baby is abandoned at the station, Patricia's reaction prompts Fowler
to point out that there is no place in the queen's uniform for ill-disciplined
hormones. Habib is being harassed by fascists, and she can look after herself,
but unfortunately, Goody tries to do it for her. Fowler is planning a camping
trip for young offenders, while Grim is planning to give them a short, sharp
shock.
The local amateur drama group has passed Fowler over for the lead in the
annual performance, despite his having donated a half-bottle of Sainsburys
whisky to the raffle. A homeless couple expecting a child turns up at the
station. Meanwhile, Grim and Kray are on the trail of a vicious gang of
brutal carol singers. Habib doesn't celebrate the season, but when Goody
brings her a very special present, she foolishly accepts it.
Generation X comes to the station, and in Fowler's opinion the "X" stands
for x-tremely stupid. Drugs are becoming a problem, and Grim is on the
case. There is a plumbing crisis back at the station, forcing the women to
share the men's locker room‹ a prospect which has Goody extremely excited.
Meanwhile, Patricia takes up a new age therapy at the local health club,
and Fowler doesn't approve.
Everyone except Goody‹ who is training to be a gladiator‹is excited when
the town makes it to the second round in the soccer championship. The
mayor is using the game to attract foreign investment to the town, which is
slowly becoming the sweat shop of Europe. Meanwhile Fowler decides to train
the squad in riot control.
A BBC documentary camera crew comes to the station intent on recording an
absolutely realistic view of policing. The officers, however, think it's
their big break‹ Habib has a makeover; Glastone juggles; Goody shows off
with a glove puppet called Gladys; and Grim considers a remake of the police
classic "Come on Silver Lady." Fowler is horrified. He believes they should
all present themselves as they are‹ no better and no worse‹ until he notices
that he's going gray.
Patricia decides to spend her time off protesting a new road planned for the
town. While out policing the disturbances, Goody falls in love with a
protester and changes his name to Pixie. Meanwhile, the paint on Grim's
car is scratched, and he devotes the full resources of the CID to finding
the maniac before he scratches again. The chaos continues as a rumor emerges
that the MI5 has chosen Gasforth for a post-cold war covert operation. Fowler
is in control‹ until Habib finds that the protesters have suspended him from
a tree.
New uniforms and equipment arrive, and the officers are asked to model
them. Is this Goody's chance to join Kate Moss and Naomi Cambell on the
catwalk? Habib is determined to find out what the "sticky out bit" on the
American-style nightstick is for. Meanwhile, Grim is desperate to catch a
slippery owl-like villain and is thinking about bending the rules to do it.
Fowler is in a romantic mood and proposes to Patricia over a candle lit
frozen lasagna con funghi. Unfortunately, he lets it slip that a promotion
review board is looming and that an inspector living in sin with his sergeant
may be passed over, and she rejects him. Devastated, he agrees to a night out
with Goody and Boyle. Unfortunately, they go to the same disco Habib has
taken Patricia. Meanwhile, Grim's 20th anniversary is approaching, and he
faces the appalling prospect of have to buy Tina a box of chocolates.
