THE THIS OLD HOUSE HOUR Newton Project, Part 7 - Ask This Old House Energy-Efficient Windows/Reducing Electrical Consumption (#607)
In the first half of The This Old House Hour, host Kevin O'Connor drives up to the house to find general contractor Tom Silva helping load up a truck for the "Building Materials Resource Center," a local non-profit that will be selling the project's surplus materials to needy homeowners at discounted prices. In the basement, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey gives an update on the mechanical systems. To learn more about the home's Milford Pink granite foundation being a sign of wealth at the time the house was built, architect Treff LaFleche takes Kevin to see how the same stone was used on the Boston Public Library. Back on site, landscape contractor Roger Cook installs the new Milford Pink granite and also matches the old mortar. In the second half of the Hour, in a special Ask This Old House, the crew demonstrates several useful ways to save energy at home. Tom helps a homeowner select and install energy-efficient "replacement" windows. In the loft, Richard shows Kevin different ways to reduce the energy needed for heating water. While making a House call, Kevin and an energy auditor discuss ways to improve a heating and air conditioning system to reduce electrical consumption.

Appraisers at the Las Vegas Convention Center don't need sleight-of-hand techniques to pull amazing discoveries out of the crowd, including drawings by the legendary folk musician Woody Guthrie, given to the owner's journalist father after an interview with Guthrie; an heirloom early-19th-century tavern clock made by Aaron Willard of the renowned Boston clock manufacturing family; and a fabulous five-carat, Asscher-cut diamond ring, inherited from the owner's grandfather, owner of a jewelry store/pawn shop in a Colorado mining town. The tearful owner realizes she's hit pay dirt when the ring is valued at $165,000 to $175,000.
