Recently, a contingent of government, civic and business leaders went to Austin, Texas to see how that city has prospered over the last 15 years. As the state capital and the home of a major university, Austin has very similar characteristics to Baton Rouge. The group wanted to see what Austin was doing differently from Baton Rouge.

One of the major recommendations the group received from Austin officials was to get the young people of Baton Rouge involved in the efforts to make this city a better place in which to live.

"A Young Vision for Baton Rouge" was taped at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. It brought together over a hundred concerned citizens from a number of civic groups such as the Austin 6, Forum 35, and Youth Elect plus students from LSU, Southern and Baton Rouge Magnet High School. Ideas on the city's quality of life, education, and jobs were discussed so in the future a plan can be proposed on how Baton Rouge can keep her young people from leaving the city after graduation.

Local political expert, Jim Nickel, and WRKF News Director, Karen Henderson, were moderators for the event.
