Butterfly
Gardening
Linda Auld, the
"Bug Lady of New Orleans," is owner of Barber Laboratories, a pest control
company started by her grandfather. Her interest in butterflies has
led to her establishing Bug Lady Farms, where she gardens and raises
caterpillars for butterfly releases at special events and for butterfly
conservatories in our region.
Camellias
Art Landry has
been a camellian all his life, having learned to appreciate
these beautiful ornamentals as a child growing up in Houma, Louisiana.
He is president emeritus of the American Camellia Society and a Director
of the International Camellia Society. Art has been a show judge for
many years and is Magazine Editor of the Gulf Coast Camellia Society.
As a charter member of the Baton Rouge Camellia Society, he currently
concentrates on educational programs, and maintains 300-400 camellias
at his home in Baton Rouge.

Will
Perkins
is a biologist and environmental engineer who lives and works in the
Zachary area. At their home, Will and his wife cultivate a wide range
of seasonal organic vegetables and herbs that are
sold under the Port Hudson Organics and Natural Woman Products trade
names. Will is a member of the Louisiana Organic Growers Association
and is also involved in air quality initiatives in the Baton Rouge area.
Landscape
Tips for Southern Gardens
Anne Spafford
is an Assistant Professor in the School of Landscape Architecture at
Louisiana State University. She received her bachelor degree in Ornamental
Horticulture and master's degree in Landscape Architecture, both from
the University of Illinois. After working for the Historic Landscape
Division of the Army Corps of Engineers and then a residential design
firm, she left her colleagues in the midwest 2 1/2 years ago for the
greener and warmer pastures of the Deep South. She now teaches several
courses in plant materials and planting design and researches how landscapes
impact human well-being.
Landscaping
with Native Plants
Bill Fontenot
is a naturalist with the Acadiana Park Nature Center in Lafayette. He
and his wife also run a native plant nursery and ecological consulting
service at their home in Carencro, Louisiana.
Bill will be featuring commercial and residential landscapes which he
and others have designed using native plants. He is the author of several
books, including 'Native Gardening in the South,' and has contributed
hundreds of articles to various newsletters, newspapers, and magazines
throughout the eastern U.S. He is a former president of the Louisiana
Native Plant Society, a former director of the Gulf Coast Native Plant
Conference, and a former program director for the Cullowhee Native Plant
Conference, held each summer at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee,
North Carolina.
