ABOUT THE CONGO SQUARE RESIDENCY

• The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis made its New Orelans debut with the Congo Square Residency from April 17-23, 2006.
  
• Throughout the week, the band was featured in a host of events including world-premiere performances, collaborations, free concerts, Jazz For Young PeopleSM, master classes and jazz lectures. This residency is part of the critically acclaimed big band’s Jazz From Coast to Coast 2005-06 worldwide tour.
  
• In collaboration with the band, African percussionists Yacub Addy and Odadaa!, will perform newly commissioned works based on the legendary Congo Square, a historic site for music and dance and the only place where African Americans were permitted to congregate during slavery in America.
  
• In addition to performances, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra participated in multiple master classes for students, educators and cultural leaders that focused on the importance of jazz in the cultural landscape and in the educational system. Education is a priority for Jazz at Lincoln Center and events like these have always been an integral part of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra touring activities.

• Comprised of 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, the band has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra for over 12 years.
  
• Featured in all aspects of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming, the remarkably versatile LCJO performs and leads educational events – including Jazz for Young People^SM family concert series, the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, the Jazz for Young People^TM Curriculum, educational residencies, workshops and concerts for students and adults - in New York, across the U.S. and around the world.
  
• Under Music Director Wynton Marsalis, the LCJO spends over half of the year on tour. The LCJO performs a vast repertoire, from rare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works, including compositions and arrangements by jazz masters and current and former LCJO members.
  
• Over the last few years, the LCJO has collaborated with many of the world’s leading symphony orchestras.
  
• To date, ten recordings featuring the LCJO have been released and internationally distributed; the most recent title is A Love Supreme (2005), Marsalis’s big band arrangement of John Coltrane’s original recording, on Palmetto Records.
