: Welcome to LPB's Online Chat
for In a Good Place...
B.
Holland: I need the phone # of SHIIP.
Gwmizer:
what is SHIIP?
Tammy:
We are waiting for our panel to arrive from the studio.
B.
Holland: It is an organization that was mentioned on the program?
gwmizer:
sorry, missed the program, thought I would catch up here.
B.
Holland: It was an excellent program especially for us --the
sandwich generation.
Tammy:
SHIIP 1-800-259-5301
B.
Holland: Thanks.
Tammy:
B. Holland asked for the phone number for SHIIP. It is 1-800-259-5301.
Tammy:
Welcome to the Online Chat for LPB's In a Good Place. Our panel
has arrived. Are there any questions?
Skip:
I can't imagine how I could convince my mother to go to a nursing
home - she is so fearful of those things.
gwmizer:
maybe a quick intro of the panel for those of us who missed the
show.
Skip:
Good idea.
Charles
Cefalu: Charles A. Cefalu MD, MS, Professor and Chief of Geriatrics,
LSU HSC/NO, La. and President of the La. Geriatrics Society.
lisa
deaton: I am Lisa Deaton the Director of Regulatory Agency
with the Department of Health and Hospitals.
Marlene:
Skip, Because your mother is afraid, the thing that would probably
help most is to involve her in your exploration of nursing homes.
Gwen
Moore: Gwen Moore, Ph.D., Outreach Coordinator with Alzheimer's
Services of the Capital Area
linda
sadden: Linda Sadden, State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Governor's
Office of Elderly Affairs
Skip:
This program seems so geared to nursing homes - what about other
alternatives??
gwmizer:
thanks for the intros, any one else having trouble reading the
lime green font?
B.
Holland: My mother had a small stroke (speech was affected)
about 2 months ago. She is still very independent, but she has
fallen three times
Tammy:
You can change it in your settings in the toolbar above
linda
sadden : Skip: This program really was about once you had reached
the decision that a nursing home was the right place. There is
much more information about alternatives on the Department Health
and Hospitals websites and on the internet.
Skip
: Thanks.
gwmizer:
alternatives include Home health. Assisted Living, adult Day Cares,
and of course moving in with families.
Marlene:
Holland, it seems that you are possibly considering a nursing.
Whether or not you are actively seeking nursing home placement
at this time, this is the time to start your search.
lisa
deaton : B. Holland -Are you asking what alternatives are
available for your mom.
B.
Holland: Sorry I hit the wrong button ---to continue --- I
am worried that she may not be able to manage by herself for much
longer. She has a home and vehicle that are paid for but an income
of only 795 per month. Her medication runs over 150 per month.
How does that figure into the formula?
Marlene:
Holland, one of the things that you would want to ask the nursing
home is what type of fall prevention program they have in place.
Do they view restraints as the first line of fall prevention?
Or do they have a variety of options that leave restraints as
a last alternative? Do they have a rehabilitative program to help
strengthen your mother so that falls are less likely? These are
important questions.
gwmizer:
fall prevention programs, restorative, therapy, and alternatives
to restraints are very important.
lisa
deaton: B. Holland it sounds like she may be eligible for
Medicaid. You could either call a Medicaid Parish Office at 225-922-1542
or you can go to the Medicaid website at www.dhh.state.la.us/medicaid/parishoff.htm
Marlene:
When trying to prevent falls, it is most often a trial and error
process to determine what works for the individual resident. This
can be very frustrating to residents, but is VERY important.
gwmizer:
I am not a member of the panel, but I would like to introduce
myself as well. My name is Gary Mize and I am a retired Nurse
and an active Nursing home Administrator.
Marlene:
gwmizer, how did you like the program? Do you think that the information
was helpful to families?
B. Holland to linda sadden: What is the phone # for your
office Linda?
B.
Holland: Linda, what is your office's phone #?
gwmizer:
I missed the program, HA HA, but I did post the flyers for all
my families and visitors to see. I am here to see what kind of
feedback you guys get, so that I can improve where needed.
