Deacon John’s Jump Blues

on Louisiana Public Broadcasting

- New
Orleans’ musical legend
Deacon John takes center stage in Deacon John’s
Jump Blues.
If you’re not familiar with the term Jump Blues, it’s a combination
of Big Band and R&B music that was a precursor to the Rock ‘n Roll
hits in the 1950s and 60s in New Orleans.
Backed by a 20-member orchestra of the Big Easy’s finest musicians led
by Wardell Quezerque, Deacon salutes the musical pioneers of the Crescent City
with performances of such classics as Nobody Knows You When You’re Down
and Out, Let the Good Times Roll, Going Back to New Orleans and Professor Longhair’s
signature song Tipitina.
Recorded in High Definition Television (HDTV) and high resolution audio at
the historic Orpheum Theater in downtown New Orleans, the legendary guitarist
and
vocalist is joined by Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Allen Toussaint, Dr. John,
blues legend Henry Butler and newcomer Teedy Boutte’ who performs a
stirring version of Piece of My Heart.
Produced by Vetter Communications Corporation, this exciting concert was
the first local production to air in high definition when it premiered on
the
six-station LPB network and WYES in New Orleans and aired simultaneously
on LPB’s
digital stations WLPB-DT25 in Baton Rouge and KLTS-DT25 in Shreveport.
“ This program is the culmination of two years work on the CD and concert
DVD,” Vetter Communication President/CEO
Cyril Vetter said. “My daughter
Gabe’ and I have talked about doing a project like this since she was
three years old. We wanted to showcase and preserve the great New Orleans
music from
the 1950s and 60s in a way that would also be accessible to contemporary
audiences. This project with Deac seemed like a natural way to do it.”
For Louisiana Public Broadcasting, it is a chance to bring some lagniappe to
its HDTV broadcasts that normally include only five- to ten-minute segments of
PBS HDTV programs on its digital channels.
“We are so pleased that we could work with Cyril and Gabe’ to not
only feature the great music of Deacon John, but also to show this special concert
in HDTV,” LPB President/CEO Beth Courtney said.
Deacon John Moore, a 2000 inductee into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame,
has been a fixture in the New Orleans music scene for more than four decades.
His
band, The Ivories, has included such New Orleans musical icons as Charles,
Cyril and Art Neville, James Booker and Zigaboo Modeliste. You can also hear
Deacon’s
guitar on many of the great New Orleans songs of the 1960s including Irma Thomas’ Ruler
of My Heart, Mother-In-Law by Ernie K-Doe, Working in the Coal Mine by Lee
Dorsey and Tell It Like It Is by Aaron Neville.
Collector’s
versions of the CD and DVD available exclusively through
LPB and WYES-TV.
