Early Detection & Prevention of Cancer

The American Cancer Society recommends that all men and women between the ages of 20 and 40 should get a cancer-related checkup every three years. For men and women, the checkup should include examinations for cancer of the skin, thyroid, and lymph nodes. Men should also be checked for cancer of the testicles while women should be checked for cancer of the breasts, cervix, and ovaries.

The risks for all cancers go up after the age of 50, so yearly exams are recommended. Yearly exams for skin cancer are recommended for everyone over 40 and breast cancer exams are recommended for all women over 40.

If you have a family history of cancer, you may be at-risk for getting that particular type of cancer. Information is available on the risk factors for each type of cancer and how you can lower that risk by getting regular checkups, eating healthy, exercising regularly and quitting smoking.
