It includes Lee Greenwood's performance with the band during the 2001 homecoming game. It also traces the history of the band from its origin in 1893 to the days when Huey Long gave the band just about everything it could possibly want. We also look at some of the more recent band directors who have left strong marks on the L.S.U. marching band including L. Bruce Jones, Tom Tyra, Bill Swor and the current band director, Frank Wickes.

The show follows the band from its humble beginning to its John Phillip Sousa Foundation Award as the top college band in America.


Joined by the Tiger

The band began with only about a dozen students and grew slowly until the controversial and charismatic Huey Long was elected governor in 1928. Using his power and influence, Long turned the band into one of the most well-known show bands in the country. This special also looks at the men who helped build the band's reputation not only for being brash but also highly regarded for its precision music and marching.
