Louisiana Public Broadcasting invites you to a special night with award-winning journalist Bill Moyers for a free screening of his new documentary Rikers: An American Jail on Tuesday, May 2 at 6:30PM at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge. This documentary, produced and hosted by Moyers, has been critically-acclaimed as the first documentary to tell the stories of this infamous jail solely through the voices of those who have spent years there. The film provides a window into what it's like to be imprisoned in the United States where more than 2.2 million people are jailed.

Rikers: An American Jail comes at a time when calls to improve jails and reform criminal justice system are growing across the country. Louisiana state prisons and parish jails hold 40,000 inmates, which is more per capita than any other state and double the national average. Hear Moyers present his unique perspective on his approach to this topic and the production of the film, “We need to hear their stories in their voices, not filtered through a journalist,” Moyers said.

Bill Moyers has an esteemed history of producing award-winning documentaries, commentary and news and public affairs programming for PBS, NBC, and CBS, highlighted by programs such as Amazing Grace, The Power of Myth, Faith and Reason, and A World of Ideas. Moyers has received numerous awards and honorary degrees for his investigative journalism and civic activities, including two Pulitzer prizes, more than 30 Emmys, and virtually every other major television journalism prize, including a lifetime Peabody Award, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award, and a George Polk Career Award for contributions to journalistic integrity and investigative reporting.

Attendees will receive a complimentary three-month subscription to LPB Passport and will have the opportunity to visit the NEH “Power of Children” photography exhibit in the Senate Chamber.
