Have you ever wondered if those family heirlooms are actually worth anything?

Have you ever wondered if those family heirlooms, paintings, coins and weapons your family has been holding on to are actually worth anything? The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office gathered up some experts and held a special two-day event in October at the State Archives Building to sort the gems from the junk. LPB taped the fair and will show highlights from the event.

Appraisers examined a wide range of items including an antique Colt pistol, a signed lithograph of Abraham Lincoln, a 1915 LSU Calendar, a wood carving of Napoleon done by Louisiana artist Pierre Joseph Landry and the ledger from an African American boarding house signed by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Cab Calloway and many others.

“We thought that this was a great opportunity for Louisianans to get involved in our culture and history by showing us the things that are most important to them,” Secretary of State Jay Dardenne said.
Dardenne hopes to partner with LPB on more of these antiques events in other parts of the state.

The items from the fair were on display at the State Archives Building at 3851 Essen Lane.
