Flood Recovery

As the two year anniversary of the August 2016 floods approaches, many people are still trying to recover. We spoke with Office of Community Development Director Pat Forbes about checks going out, progress in Congress and extensions for those still in temporary housing.

Kids Count

49th overall, 50th in economic wellbeing, 47th in education and 44th in health. Every year, the Annie E Casey Foundation compiles measurements of childhood well-being in a report called Kids Count. Child care advocates weigh in on how to turn those statistics around.

Sales Tax Reforms

During the last special session to fix the fiscal cliff, lawmakers unintentionally got rid of the state’s sales tax-free weekends. But lawmakers are facing more pressing reforms due to the U.S. Supreme Court decision on internet sales tax.

Last Island Hurricane

Before there was Katrina, before Betsy, Audrey, the 1893 Cheniere Caminada hurricane, there was the Last Island hurricane of 1856.
