Panelist Bio

Capt. George Ricks
The Save Louisiana Coalition

Capt. Ricks served on the New Orleans Fire Department for 22 years. Upon retirement, he toured the country as a Professional Bass Angler on the Prestigious Bassmaster Tournament Trail for 9 years. In 1999 he started Get-Away Fishing Charters and has been a professional fishing guide in Hopedale, La. for 18 years. In 2013, he founded The Save Louisiana Coalition and presently serves as President and CEO. He now represents upwards of 1000 members of the commercial and recreational fishing industries, as well as seafood wholesalers, coastal residents, and restaurant owners.

He has worked extensively in the last four years in the State Legislature, as well as Washington, DC on issues that threaten our coastal communities and commercial and recreational fishermen. He has been the most outspoken opponent of the diversion concept of coastal restoration, and has appeared on numerous television shows and interviews, both locally and Nationally, including Bloomberg TV, National Geographic, and Ajazeera

He is also Coastal Project and Research Coordinator for St. Bernard Parish, holding this role since February of 2016, and acts as a liaison between Parish Government and the fishing community.

     11/17 - Louisiana: Sportsman’s Paradise or Problem?

Is Louisiana a Sportsman’s Paradise or Problem?
For decades Louisiana has proclaimed itself as the “Sportsman’s Paradise.” But for today’s hunters, changes to Louisiana’s landscape have caused a decline in the quality of the state’s deer habitat and smaller game. For coastal fishermen, private property rights often unduly restrict access to waters that are considered public in any other state.

Louisiana Public Square explores some of the challenges that the state’s hunters and anglers face on “Louisiana: Sportsman’s Paradise or Problem?” Wednesday, November 22 at 7p.m. on LPB and in New Orleans on WLAE. (Recording Tuesday, November 21)
