LPB Resources Electronic Field Trips Video Professional Development

Turning the Tide, an award-winning LPB documentary, takes an in-depth look at the proposed solutions, proven strategies, and bold engineering that can “turn the tide” on Louisiana’s coastal erosion problem.

Turning the Tide: A Companion Teaching Guide and the companion video clips will encourage students to ask questions about the environmental and economic crisis resulting from the loss of land along Louisiana’s Gulf Coast and explore how choices made today will affect their future.

The guide, designed for middle and high school teachers and students, provides lessons in Economics, Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Art and Geography that are aligned to state and national standards. Through interactive classroom activities, students will learn about the threat to crucial wetland ecosystems and how changes affect the Gulf seafood populations and North American migratory bird and waterfowl populations. Students will also explore how this crisis affects our nation’s energy infrastructure and national security, interior navigation, and water transport for American produce and goods. Students will be able to examine how the unique lifestyle and American culture that developed in this environment are threatened.

Turning the Tide is nominated for a Suncoast Emmy for Best Documentary and is the winner of the International CINE Golden Eagle Award and the Governor’s Award-Conservationist of the Year by the Louisiana Wildlife Federation.
