History 598 Natchitoches/Poverty Point Trip As a preparation for the upcoming Southeastern TAH field-trip to Natchitoches and Poverty Point, the tour-class will meet to read and discuss articles and excerpts revealing the significant history and geography of the places we will visit on the trip weekend. We will look at settings, situations and possible scenarios of one of North America's premier prehistoric cultures as revealed at Poverty Point's (still rather) mysterious mound-complex near Epps, Louisiana, in East Carrol Parish. Natchitoches on the Cane and (formerly) Red Rivers will be explored for its rich French-and-Indian, Creole and Creole-of-Color, Antebellum-Bellum-Postbellum, and literary-and-artistic heritages. Attention will be paid to using the readings and tour-based information in-tandem with state standards and classroom presentations. Participants must attend and participate in the on-campus prep in order to make the off-campus tour.
The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from May 15 to May 31 . Meeting dates are May 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, and 31. The trip will be on the weekend of June 1-3. Participants will receive 3 graduate credits and 45 CLUs for completing the class and attending the trip. Participants will also receive a $200 stipend for completing the class and the trip. Syllabus: History 498/598 Civil War Battlefields The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive study of two of the most significant battles of the American Civil War, Shiloh and Vicksburg. We will examine the battles through readings, classroom study, and most important, by walking the battlefields themselves. To make the field experience as meaningful as possible, it is essential that you undertake sufficient study of each battle before we visit the National Parks. Seeing, walking, and experiencing the battlefield terrain will only make sense if you have a good understanding of each engagement. In addition to written work, oral participation is required and expected of all students. .pdf format.
