Louisiana's Role in TRADITIONAL AMERICAN HISTORY (TAH) PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENTS Current: • 21st Annual Deep Delta Civil War Symposium June 8-9 FREE! • Cities, Rivers, Bayous: Locals and Locales in Louisiana's Civil War • Charles Elliott has organized this year's symposium so that it addresses many of the GLE's, benchmarks, and key concepts in Louisiana's state standards. Many teachers in our TAH program attended last year and loved it, and this year should be even better.• Participants will hear lectures by 9 top-notch scholars, in addition to a Roundtable Discussion featuring several of those historians and focusing on how to teach Louisiana's Civil War. • There a catered reception on Friday night, coffee and doughnuts Saturday morning, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and two South Louisiana-style Social Hours with the participating scholars. • Qualifying Region II teachers can attend free of charge with either of two options:(1) Attend the Symposium and earn 10 CLU's and a $65 stipend. or (2) Register for History 602, do some additional reading, and earn 10 CLU's, 3 hours graduate credit, and a $200 stipend. • The Symposium is an opportunity for teachers to learn more about the Civil War in Louisiana, upgrade their ability to address state standards, meet leading historians, network with teachers from other parishes, and have fun! The Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE) website has recently been re-designed and now offers over 1,500 teaching and learning resources addressing 100 different educational topics, all available free-of-charge from the federal government. Go to free.ed.gov/ for more information. • The Center for Civic Education has again received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to host a three-week Institute at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. The Institute is entitled Political and Constitutional Theory for Citizens: The National Academy for Civics and Government. It will take place July 7-28, 2007, and all expenses for travel, books, and per diem are covered by the grant, with a modest amount left over for a stipend.
