Buffalo Soldiers
African Americans in the Frontier Army

WEBCAST DATE:
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 @ 9:00 AM CST
GRADES 6-9

African Americans have served in the military since colonial times, but it wasn’t until 1866 that black men could enlist in the Regular Peacetime Army. Native Americans called these men “Buffalo Soldiers” because their hair resembled the matted cushion that is between the horns of the buffalo.

This Electronic Field Trip, designed for grades 6-9, will originate from Fort Davis, Texas, which was a key post in the defense of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico and was home to both black infantry and cavalry troops. Fort Davis, now a National Historic Site, is considered one of the best remaining examples of a post-Civil War military post in the American Southwest.

Stay tuned for more exciting future field trips!

How the free electronic field trips work:

The field trips are presented by Ball State University and are open to everyone. On the day of the field trip, LPB will receive the live electronic field trip series by satellite and channel it through as a live webcast so you can watch it in your classroom over the internet. You will need a computer and broadband access in order to successfully stream the event. The computer can be connected to a monitor so an entire classroom can participate. A toll free number will be provided so you can ask questions during the field trip.

To take part in the electronic field trips you must also pre-register in two places:

1) Click on a registration link above for the current Electronic Field Trip. Complete the form to register to watch the event over the Internet. Register to watch the field trips on LPB’s site, click on Login/Register and complete the information.  Logout when you are finished.  On the day of the event come back to this site and login again to see the field trip live.

2) Go to http://www.bsu.edu/eft/home/00front.htm, click on the tab “participate in the program”, on the next screen a submenu will appear, select “register for an EFT.” Fill in the information. Be sure to use the drop down menu and select Broadcast, web, and curriculum. There is no cost to you to participate.
