Web Quest (doc and pdf)

 

Grade Level:  4-6

 

Curriculum Area:  Science and Social Studies

Lesson Objectives:

 

The students will work with a partner using the Internet to find the answers to a web quest about space exploration.

 

The students will work in cooperative groups to discuss information and evaluate its importance to space exploration.

 

The students will work in groups to present learned information to the class.

 

Technology Connection:  Internet

 

Assessment:  The rubric to assess the Web Quest.

 

Procedures:

 

1.   The teacher will introduce the topic of exploration.

 

2.   The teacher will explain the purpose of the Web Quest and the tasks that students will be expected to perform upon completion of the questions.

 

      Task 1:       Use the World Wide Web to learn about the major events that shaped the United States Space Program and record answers to the questions on the web quest form provided by the teacher.

 

      Task 2:       Use the information gathered to understand the events that were important in propelling the space program forward and the technologies that were needed to make it possible.

 

      Some questions for students to consider when finished the web quest are:

 

            1.   What major event caused the United States to enter into the “space race?” Why was the United States so concerned about this event? 

            2.   What two countries were primarily involved in the “space race” and what were they racing toward?

            3.   In this “space race,” what technological advances were necessary and what major accomplishments were made in space exploration?

      

      Task 3:       In small groups, students will discuss findings with others and be prepared to present what was learned to the class (poster, report, oral presentation, etc.).

 

3.   Using the following websites, the students will work in groups of two to complete the Web Quest.

4.   Upon completion of the web quest the students will work in cooperative groups to discuss the questions asked before beginning the activity. Then they will choose one of the evaluations suggested to present what they have learned to the class.
