OVERVIEW:
The trail left by the Civil War was one of destruction and ruin. After fighting for four years, Louisiana soldiers returned home sick at heart. Many friends and family members had been lost in battle. Soldiers returned to badly run down farms and plantations where cotton gins, and sugar mills had been burned. Horses and other livestock were gone. Steamboats were not running and railroad lines were destroyed. Union authorities occupied Louisiana and divided its people. Life in Louisiana would never be the same and change was inevitable. How would the people of Louisiana react to these changes and what impact would it have on the future policies of our state is the focus for this lesson?

By studying how the people of Louisiana reacted to the changes that occurred during post Civil War and the effects these changes had on the history of the state, students will discover that events in history have chronological relationships and patterns. Researching topics, using online resources along with traditional textbooks, students will determine that events in history have continuity; one event leading to another in a domino effect. Students will combine research to create a timeline exhibiting the chronological order of events. Quilt squares will be constructed to symbolize each event studied and placed chronologically to make a quilt displaying major events that occurred in Louisiana during Reconstruction. Students will hold a round robin discussion about alternative reactions to events during reconstruction.
