OVERVIEW:
Although the promise of change permeated Louisiana during Reconstruction, few lasting transformations took hold. The federal government had its own problems to deal with and granted Louisiana Democratic control of the state in exchange for voting for the Republican presidential candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes in the 1876 presidential election. This marked the end of the Reconstruction Era and without Republican or federal protection the rights black citizens were drastically restricted by what was known as the Jim Crow laws. Students will evaluate the events that took place-ending reconstruction in Louisiana and giving rise to the Jim Crow laws.
