Fractions and Decimals and Percents; Oh, My!
Ruth D. Bennett, Grade 4, MATHEMATICS

TIME ALLOTMENT:
Two 50-minute class periods.

OVERVIEW:
Fractions, decimals, and percents are ways of renaming the same quantity. Constructing number meaning and demonstrating that a number can be expressed in many different forms is evident in the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents. Students in the upper elementary grades need hands-on experiences demonstrating number sense. Particular attention to common equivalent reference points should focus on real world practical situations. Textbooks at the elementary level usually have separate chapters for these three areas. The textbooks frequently do not include lessons that integrate fractions, decimals, and percents. This lesson combines fractions, decimals, and percents and relates them to the real world.

Through the activities in this lesson, students will become familiar with the relationship between common reference points (¼ = 25% = 0.25; ½ = 50% = 0.5; ¾ = 75% = 0.75; 4/4 = 1.0 = 100%). Activities will allow students to visualize and use the relationship between fractional and percentage parts of a whole.

Prior to these activities students should have some basic understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents. This activity integrates the three concepts rather than introducing them.

SUBJECT MATTER:
Mathematics

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The learner will:
• Read/write fractions with denominators 2, 4, & 8, including relating a fraction to the shaded area of a circle.
• Compare/order fractions using standard notation and comparative terminology (more, less, greater, same, between, almost, about).
• Read and write decimal numbers to hundredths.
• Relate fractions with denominators 2, 4, & 8 to their decimal equivalents.
• Use common reference points, including relating fractions for half and fourths to their decimal and percent equivalents (identify a value as “between ¼ and ½” or “about 50%”).
• Relate fractions, decimals, and percents to real-life situations.
