LEAP 21: Making the Grade is a joint effort between LPB and the Louisiana State Department of Education to help students prepare for the Math and Language Arts sections of the LEAP test. There are 15 segments each for 4th and 8th grade Math and Language Arts based upon the tutoring guide developed by the Louisiana Department of Education.

Program Descriptions

4th Grade English Language Arts topics covered include: Poetry reading, rhyme, and rhythm, short answers, multiple choice, biography, author’s purpose, main idea, patterns in poetry, topic sentences, main idea, details, retelling the story, visualization, inferences, skimming the story, clues and hints, prediction, prewriting, clustering, descriptive words/specific language, revision/proofreading, errors in usage/grammar, confusing words/homonyms, brainstorming, purposes and types of resources, uses and locations of parts of a book.

4th Grade Mathematics topics covered include: Addition & subtraction, multiplication, division, multiplication using large numbers, fractions, working with "unknowns," linear measurements, area and perimeter, 2- and 3-dimensional numbers, flips and turns, symmetry, similarity and congruence, charts, tables and graphs, matching data to graphs, patterns in numbers and pattern rules.

8th Grade English Language Arts topics covered include: Author’s purpose, finding details, key words, context clues, vocabulary, inferences, open-ended questions, poetry reading, comprehension, locating information, main idea, poetry reading, inferences, predicting, short answer questions, prewriting, brainstorming, paragraph writing, revising, errors in spelling/capitalization, etc., errors in grammar/usage, project resources, use of the glossary/index.

8th Grade Mathematics topics covered include: Estimation, multiplying decimals, multiplying fractions, solving equations, creating equations, perimeter, area, conversion of units, parts of a circle, properties of polygons, coordinate plane, organizing data, probability, making predictions and pattern rules.

Students who scored Approaching Basic on LEAP 21
