Moon Scavenger Hunt Lesson Plan

Grade Level: K-4 grades

Curriculum Area: Language Arts

Lesson Objectives:

  • ELA-4-E2 giving and following directions/procedures; (1, 4)
  • ELA-4-E5 speaking and listening for a variety of audiences (e.g., classroom, real-life, workplace) and purposes (e.g., awareness, concentration, enjoyment, information, problem 
    solving); (1, 2, 4, 5)
  • ELA-4-E6 listening and responding to a wide variety of media (e.g., music, TV, film, speech); (1, 3, 4, 5)
  • ELA-5-E2 locating and evaluating information sources (e.g., print materials, databases, CD-ROM references, Internet information, electronic reference works, community and government data, television and radio resources, audio and visual materials); (1, 3, 4, 5)
  • ELA-5-E4 using available technology to produce, revise, and publish a variety of works; (1, 3, 4)

Technology Performance Indicators: Use technology tools (e.g., publishing, multimedia tools, and word processing software) for individual and for simple collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities for a variety of audiences. (1,3)

Technology Connection: Internet, KidPix

Assessment: Space shuttle picture, Scavenger hunt

Procedures:

  1. Using KidPix have students draw a picture of a space shuttle going to the moon. (Sample)
  2. Under the picture describe what they think they would need to survive.
  3. Print and display student work.
  4. The teacher will locate age-appropriate websites about space. Write 10-12 questions to be answered from the website. Suggestion:  www.hq.nasa.gov/osf/qanda2.html
  5. Teacher gives students any background knowledge they need to complete the Scavenger Hunt.
  6. Divide students into small groups and give each group a copy of the Scavenger Hunt. (See an example)
  7. Have the groups of students complete the Scavenger Hunt. (See the answer key)
  8. Optional: Have students write the amount of time it took to complete the assignment. Give a prize (moon pies) to the group with the most correct answers in the least amount of time.
  9. Assess student work with a rubric. (See our sample)
