Moon Phases Lesson Plan

Grade Level: K-4 grades

Curriculum Area: Science

Lesson Objectives:

  • ESS-E-B2 demonstrating how the relationship of the Earth, moon, and sun causes eclipses and moon phases; (2, 3, 4)
  • ESS-E-B3 observing and recording the changing appearances and positions of the moon in the sky at night and determining the monthly pattern of lunar change; (1,2,3,4)

Technology Performance Indicators: Use technology tools (e.g., publishing, multimedia tools, and word processing software) for individual and for simple collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities for a variety of audiences. (1,3)

Technology Connection: Internet, Drawing software

Assessment: Moon pictures, worksheet, discussion questions

Vocabulary:

reflect orbit waxing phase
moon quarter waning crescent
revolve full planet  

Time: takes place over a two-week period

Procedures:

  1. Before the lesson the teacher will view and bookmark all or some of the following sites: http://www.googol.com/moon/, http://aa.usno.navy.mil/AA/data/docs/MoonPhase.html, http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~dolan/java/MoonPhase.html, http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/vphase.html
  2. Have students draw a picture of the moon on a sheet of paper.
  3. Explain and show students the phases of the moon and introduce vocabulary.
  4. Do a moon science experiment to show how the moon reflects the sun's light. (Use the one provided or find one of your own).
  5. Give each student an "Observing Moon Phases" calendar to chart moon phases for two weeks. ( Calendar answer key) (If you have a digital camera, take pictures of the moon during the two weeks to see if the students agree.)
  6. Discuss what they saw and have them complete the work sheet  (moon pictures for work sheet) putting the moon phases in order. (Work sheet key)
  7. As a group answer the discussion questions. (Discussion questions key)
  8. Have students draw the moon and phases in a software program (e.g. KidPix, Paint). (See an example) Compare these to the one they first drew on paper.
  9. Assess student work using a rubric. (See our sample)
